Building back
Posted by KE8HNK on 2024-02-27 at 03:19When I got into the hobby I was super stoked but then I had a mentor (Elmer) who was controlling (very) went to Dayton Hamvention and other Hamvention’s (he was my boss) to sell used equipment but never got to experience the true joys of the hobby. couple that with strife from work, family issues with the radio and trying to find a semi permanent home for the HF radios and go- boxes my options were very thin. Trying to find a spot to operate in the basement that wouldn’t disturb the family wasn’t easy so being a carpenter and woodworker for over 20 years and maintenance work over 25 years I have learned the skills to make it what I want, and while one day I may have to move at least for now I have a slice of pie that I can call my own. Here are some pics as I progress and April 8th is the deadline (want to operate the solar eclipse) Next is painting the walls adding trim and moving onto the moving the desk in

Didn’t get much done last night as the weather was going to be potentially rough but today sanding, more floor and carpet hopefully the wall can be painted Friday and the shack up and running on the temporary antenna Sunday or Monday

Jim today hopefully I will be able to toss on the other coat of paint clean up the corner mount the weather station and clocks back Friday. Today begins the tearing down of the rest of my station and heat shrinking the new red desk light. Final touches are a rope light that will accent the wall and a more nautical/Railroad theme for the room.

This shack project is oh-so-cool! Sure wish I had that kind of talent and the energy to “make it so” (as Jean Luc Picard would say).

WOW. How did that happen in like – overnight? We went from barely some blue paint to a mega shack. Love it. Feels like a real control room! Congrats.

Staging and planning plus a lot of overnight work. I worked on the painting and had all the fasteners in place prior to painting. Then it was add screws, hook stuff up, and move in ( I had disassembled my station Prior) I am designing my next one which will be even bigger but I wanted to test out the feel and colors and have something to play around with until the time comes for the new houses.

Good job, Sir. You have a fine shack there. One of these days I’m going to log into some ham site and see my QSL card pinned to someone’s wall. 🙂-

I created the room in our basement, being a carpenter for 20+ years really paid off still a smaller space that what I really wanted but never the less on the right direction.

Just noticed the railroad light. Wow. Do you have to operate with sunglasses? 😎 This said, I have bright Christmas lights in my shack 365 days a year 🤣

The camera made the railroad light look brighter than it seems. I went with a railroad / seaside theme, for years I have loved and photographed railroads and last October we went on a cruise to key west and Cozumel and that is where the nautical theme was born…
