Emcom or Emcomm?
Posted by Jim on 2024-01-14 at 12:14One of the oldest debates in the field of emergency communication… Emcom or Emcomm? One or two “m’s”
Who thinks what? And, as much as possible, try to give us the origin story of your version.

That is a good question. I have been involved with EmCom/EmComm for two decades. I have seen it both ways. FEMA has listed it both ways too. Depending on who you talk to at the ARRL, it has been listed both ways yet mostly as EmCom. I usually use EmCom myself. I am interested to hear from others and what they think and any history of whether it is EmCom or EmComm.

The counties “Emergency Services Department” is called the “ESD” so I guess the ones in charge decided we were “Ecoms” and that’s how we’re described in the County EOP (Emergency Operations Plan). The Emergency Operations Center is also the “EOC” rather than the “EmOC” so it seems like no one here uses anything but the “E” in their acronyms.
I kinda like it all uniform and standardized like that.

I used to live in Broad Creek, off of NC-24 there in Carteret County North Carolina.

If you ever come back to the area holler at me on the K4GRW repeater.~Anthony, KD3Y

I loved it there. Property, house, family, and I lived through a few hurricanes in the years we were there too. Going to be back in the area in April for a few days. I will hit up the repeater and see who is monitoring.

I’d say its EmComm 2 m’s as its spelled Communications with 2 m’s. Its not Comunications 🙂

Thank you for posting the pics. When I was back there in April I did hit up the repeaters and had a few respond. Most the time they were quiet. Wife and I enjoyed visiting the ole stomping grounds.
