Finding a contesting site
We all know the drill: the radios work, the antennas are tuned, and the generator is gassed up. But do we actually have a place to set up?
For those who leave the home shack for Field Day, Winter Field Day, or special events, outdoor site acquisition is often the most stressful part of the planning phase. We look everywhere:
-
Public Parks
-
School grounds
-
Private parking lots
-
Remote backyards
I admit, I lose sleep over this. My group currently uses a State Park in Maryland, but every year feels tenuous, we are never quite sure if our “welcome” has expired.
My Question: What is your strategy? Has anyone discovered a foolproof method for securing long-term access to operating locations? I’d love to hear your success stories — or your nightmares — about finding a spot to get on the air.
