BUMMED. We decided to postpone to the rain date because the models showed there was a chance of rain in the mid-morning. Well, turns out that the models – every one of them – were inaccurate. At this point looks like if there is any rain whatsoever, it’ll come mid- to late-afternoon.

Is MAIPN an AREDN-based network? Or is it similar to AREDN, but not compatible? Thinking about the more widespread compatibility issue.

Jim, I know you’re quite knowledgeable on these things…can you share more?

I recall researching AREDN in the past but never got setup for it. There could be value in getting AREDN operational in MoCo, and I may be interested in participating. Along with your research I suggest also looking into MAIPN (Mid-Atlantic IP Network) https://maipn.org/. It is a similar but different network in the area.

I’m volunteering for the MCM and in the course of getting ready, I see that certain stations will be setting up AREDN nodes. I’m curious about AREDN and have spent the morning reading up on it. I see that there are several “standing” networks in the area including Northern Virginia and Frederick. I’m wondering if there is one in MoCo and whether…

Thank you for posting the pics. When I was back there in April I did hit up the repeaters and had a few respond. Most the time they were quiet. Wife and I enjoyed visiting the ole stomping grounds.

I’d say its EmComm 2 m’s as its spelled Communications with 2 m’s. Its not Comunications 🙂

Preparedness is the key though some preppers may jump on the ham bands to without proper licenses and the GMRS bands may not be as busy depending on Geo-Location Such as us we have several schools that use a few of the channels so planning the GMRS takes some listening and maybe even looking for repeaters in the area as well.

I have the GMRS license as well and have been toying with letting Maria off the hook and not pushing her to get her ham ticket. My frustration is managing two systems. I really like the idea of not having two HTs on my belt when I walk away from the RV. I’ll do this. Give it one more year of harrassing; if I fail, I go for the GMRS backup plan.…

Jim, Some of our family is over 70 and not tech savvy. They do not feel the need or have the desire to get the license. Others are working on getting the license, our long term plan is to use the GMRS (set and forget on a channel) and simple training on pressing the button. How Many personally prep their family in such cases even if the members of the family do not have ham licenses, Ie: GMRS, CB, FRS

I loved it there. Property, house, family, and I lived through a few hurricanes in the years we were there too. Going to be back in the area in April for a few days. I will hit up the repeater and see who is monitoring.

I used to live in Broad Creek, off of NC-24 there in Carteret County North Carolina.
