The 25th USA Radio Orienteering Championships are set for August 12-16 near Mt. Hood, Oregon, and this year they double as the IARU Region 2 Championships for North and South America. That’s a meaningful milestone for a community that has grown from a handful of serious North American competitors into a genuine international presence.

The classic 80-meter and 2-meter formats remain the backbone of competition, and they’re not going anywhere. But foxoring keeps gaining ground, and it’s easy to see why. The format puts a real premium on map and compass skills that the classic events sometimes let you fudge with strong RDF instincts. When transmitters are so low-power that you can’t hear them until you’re practically on top of them, there’s no shortcuts in your navigation. You read the map or you lose time.

At last year’s championships in the Uwharrie Mountains of North Carolina, foxoring drew some of the sharper performances of the week. The younger competitors in particular seemed to take to it naturally.

Mt. Hood in August is going to be a serious venue. Fast terrain, varied elevation, classic Pacific Northwest forest. The dual Region 2 designation makes it a harder event to skip if you’re even mildly on the fence.

Anyone here planning to compete or make the trip to Oregon? And for those who have run foxoring events, is it changing how you train for the classics, or do you treat them as pretty separate disciplines?
