Becoming a Merit Badge Counselor in Scouting
Becoming a Merit Badge Counselor in Scouting
This is for the Scouting Organization with Headquarters in Texas, USA (B.S.A.). For Girl Scouts in the USA or any other Scouting organization, please contact them directly.
If you wish to teach the Radio Merit Badge on a regular basis, there are a few things you have to do ahead.
1) There is a fee of $25. I have been told this covers the background check. At this moment it has to be done online direct with the national office. If you are already in Scouting at a different capacity, your yearly dues cover it. Sometimes at a “one time event”,like University of Scouting, this may be waived.
2) Fill out the Merit Badge form. This is where you write what badge you are able to be counselor of, and if it is because of a Job, Training, or Hobie.
3) Youth protection Training found online. But in addition to, there are R&R of the the institution that holds the Charter agreement, Tribe/Town/Township/County/State that may
require you to take their youth protection training before you can work
with youth.4) Fill in the Adult Application & Background check form.
5) Online Merit Badge training
There is also many other links and materials that are beneficial to being a great Merit Badge Counselor that can be found at Scouting.org.
NOTES:
A) I have had many adults back out as they find it a big Hassle to go through the process to become an MBC. But for me, when a Scout comes to me and says “Thank you”, “With out your help…”, and or invites me to their Eagle Court of Honor, and even more positive comments are said by the Scout or Parent.. That is a big Satisfaction that Money Can’t Buy.
B) Links were attached, but they did not come through. a search for Scouting Merit Badge Counselor should give links to the forms, training and other material.
