This is something that has been bugging me since the Virginia earthquake of 2011. When the earthquake hit, everyone where I worked was directed to assemble in the parking lot, wait for a head count and then hang out until the building had been declared safe to reenter. After the head count, I went to my car to listen to the local repeater. There was an emergency net and the exchanges were as follows:

Net control: “Stations with emergency traffic, please call now.”

Station 1 after being acknowledged: “My brother in law works in the area of the earthquake. I can find out all about it tonight.

Net control: “Thank you for your message. Stations with emergency traffic, please call now”

Station 2 after being acknowledged: “The repeater on 147.xxx has a direct connection with the police department near the earthquake. You should tune to that repeater.”

Net control: Thank you for your message. Stations with emergency traffic, please call now”.

And so it went for the 45 minutes until the building was cleared for us to go back to work.

Sorry guys, but after hearing this, I don’t think amateur radio would be a real help in an emergency. I’m not sure who is the bigger screw-up – the guys responding to request for emergency traffic with BS or the net control for not reading the riot act to them.
