Ask around: “Is Field Day a contest?” My very personal feeling is that if looks, walks, and quacks like a contest, it’s a contest. We are literally in the midst of hours of discussion on how we can improve our ‘non’ contest score; what gives?

I get that the amateur radio powers-that-be (read ARRL/RAC) posit that it’s supposed to be about camaraderie, about emergency communication, about portability, but then why have points? Why have multipliers?

    It’s a contest!

That’s all I got. Thought I’d start my day with a small rant! I’ll start a little poll…

Winter Field Day is less of a contest than Summer Field Day, but if it is an event and the ARRL sponsors it…it’s probably a contest…. Winter Field Day is organized by a different group.

Straight Key Night doesn’t seem to be a contest. Yes, we may compare our contact counts, but it’s not like Field Day where there are “points”. For me, Field Day iis a chance to do it outside.
