K3MRI: Thank you, You can buy a permit for Mexico but then you go through a lot of trouble to operate as well. Another thing is that some islands are owned by Carnival or the other companies and may add operating capabilities as well but I have not tested this water yet. With that being said you can also use HT to HT to keep in touch on the ship, a lot of folks use GMRS but hey if you have ham radio use it!!!!

With all of the stuff going on in the world we need to be not only practicing and planning for our groups and EMA’s, but our families as well. Like I had mentioned in a previous post some do not like to use radios but accept using the GMRS radio, every time we have a power outage (happens every so often) I use it to not only test equipment but to test plans, call trees and give others a chance to see how something works (or doesn’t). We never rise to the occasion but sink to the level of our training.

Jim today hopefully I will be able to toss on the other coat of paint clean up the corner mount the weather station and clocks back Friday. Today begins the tearing down of the rest of my station and heat shrinking the new red desk light. Final touches are a rope light that will accent the wall and a more nautical/Railroad theme for the room.

First Licensed in 2017 I went to a local Hamvention with my boss who was a ham and was met with the question from the future section managers why don’t you enter to win this radio… I went to apply but told him I hadn’t gotten my license yet to which he replied “why don’t you get it and come have fun with us” My boss told him I wasn’t smart enough to get my ticket and when I corrected him he said “I will buy the book for each class you want Ie: tech, general, Extra eg,” Needless to say September (5 months later I was a tech and by February 2018 I was a extra. He lost a bet that cost him 150.00 (he paid my test fees too) after that he tried to control the entry into the hobby but I cut the string and flew the coop and now enjoy Skywarn, Dayton Hamvention with my family and the grandbaby (it will be her 3rd) and we have a bright future in ham radio.

Preparedness is the key though some preppers may jump on the ham bands to without proper licenses and the GMRS bands may not be as busy depending on Geo-Location Such as us we have several schools that use a few of the channels so planning the GMRS takes some listening and maybe even looking for repeaters in the area as well.
Our family has a relay and plan hat gets reviewed annually this will also get put in as it now has moved from a possibility to a actual event. Our land line went out and they said because of water but we think it was more related to the outage…….
Awesome job on the antennas but I don’t have the time or tools to test (working on it)
I still have to get mine up that I bought and tested

Jim, Some of our family is over 70 and not tech savvy. They do not feel the need or have the desire to get the license. Others are working on getting the license, our long term plan is to use the GMRS (set and forget on a channel) and simple training on pressing the button. The Jeep and other houses have a GMRS so the older members can call one of us and the hams can relay the message kind of filling in the gaps in the comms.

The camera made the railroad light look brighter than it seems. I went with a railroad / seaside theme, for years I have loved and photographed railroads and last October we went on a cruise to key west and Cozumel and that is where the nautical theme was born…

Staging and planning plus a lot of overnight work. I worked on the painting and had all the fasteners in place prior to painting. Then it was add screws, hook stuff up, and move in ( I had disassembled my station Prior) I am designing my next one which will be even bigger but I wanted to test out the feel and colors and have something to play around with until the time comes for the new houses.
